The sight of a naked woman in public brings a smile to our lips. A naked man makes us wonder if there is an ulterior motive: is this a protest? A crazy on the loose? A scene from a Lars von Trier movie?
A nude girl is charming. It is an endorsement of life. Girls stripping off are automatic acceptable, optimistic, unthreatening, quintessentially natural. Man with his arrogance and pride is far better covered. A bare girl with a big smile reminds us of the joy of living.
This must have been the conclusion reached by photographer Jan Vels before he set out to produce Nude in Public, a book that does just what it promises on the cover, page after page of lovely girls naked in parks, on construction sites, at the laundromat, strolling through wintry landscapes, in pavement cafés, with the mechanic repairing the car, even on streets lined with crowds waiting for a procession of marathon runners to pass.
