All too often, in an effort to be ‘artistic’, nude photographers strive for that mythical quality of timelessness when photographing the nude. What many fail to realize however is that the nude, like so many art forms, often takes on the shape of what is normal or desirable specific to the date of its creation.
Scott Lane understands that better then most, and the girls photographed in Real Girls are most certainly of the here and now. They belong to a generation of women that saw the birth of such websites like Suicide Girls and Manic Jane; collections of young girls eager to shed their clothes for its new found qualities of empowerment. Here we see girls who look at the camera as if to say, “This is me, this is now, deal with it!”
