Michael Berkowitz has been an artist all of his adult life. His paintings, sculptures, and performance installations are on display in museums and galleries all over the world. It wasn't until the age of 48 that he decided to take up photography. Influenced heavily by a book of early erotic photography, Michael has quickly made a name for himself in the photographic world.
These days Michael Berkowitz concentrates purely on photography and in over four years he has never looked back to another medium. We had a chance to ask Michael some questions about his current work and what we can look forward to from him in the future.
Who would you consider to be your photographic influences?
First and foremost, I'm influenced by the early erotic photographers, mostly French, working from 1850- 1900, and all the anonymous photographers who produced all the erotic postcards in the 1800s and early 1900s. Among more contemporary photographers, I love Helmut Newton, Gilles Berquet, Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark, and especially the great Malian portrait photographers Seydou Keita and Malik Sibide'.
