Born in Peru and named after a mermaid, Elisa Lazo de Valdez began making art at the tender age of three. No wonder her images look like the underwater dreams of a child. Elisa Lazo de ValdezPHOTOGRAPHY | ELISA LAZO DE VALDEZ WORDS | ANDREW KAISER Elisa Lazo de Valdez has not always been a photographer. In her twenties she was a graphic designer, using photos only as reference tools for her illustrations. However, the appeal of working creatively with the camera soon gave way to more extensive studio and location projects, and photography was soon her central passion.
In her nude work, de Valdez expresses the beauty of the human form by contrasting it with textures and materials under strong manipulations of light and shadow. Her images often take on a dream-like quality, serene, adventurous, and laced with the unknown. In this way, she makes us look inward while looking outward at her images – an ingenious trick of the camera that she’s implanted in our minds.
Currently de Valdez is living in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and young daughter. She participates regularly in individual and group exhibitions across the United States. This is the dream of a mermaid.
