Microsoft has recently announced a new still image format called Windows Media Photo. The new format has a .WDP file extension and according to their official press release this format offers higher quality compression and better file size management then standard JPG.
When released, Windows Media Photo will support a wide range of image formats including fixed and floating point numerical representations, multiple color spaces, metadata, and transparency.
The new format is being made primarily for Windows Vista and will also be compatible with Windows XP.
