Proof that the megapixels races are far from over; Sharp has recently announced a twelve megapixel 1/1.7" sensor designed for compact cameras.
Though this may be a marketing companies dream come true, for consumers this news is not necessarily something to be jumping for joy over. Cramming even more photosites into a space of equal size can often lead to less sensitivity, higher noise, and worse, very demanding performance from tiny lens optics.
More megapixels mean a better camera right? These days that is far from a true statement and in the opinion of this humble editor, compact cameras maxed out in quality at around 7 megapixels.
