A Tribute to Bill BrandtThe Henri Cartier-Bresson foundation presents the work of Bill Brandt on display between September 21st and December 18th in Paris, France. Presented in collaboration with the Bill Brandt Archives, the show is a tribute to one of photography's greatest legends. Bill Brandt studied photography under the surrealist Man Ray in Paris and his work shows a heavy influence from his first photographic tutor. Under Man Ray he learned the value of experimentation, a quality he retained throughout his photographic career.
In 1930 he freelanced for magazines such as Lilliput and Harpers Bazaar but lost interest in such work after World War II when he turned his efforts to more artistic ventures rather then strict reporting.
It was during this time that Bill Brandt's surrealist roots really began to strengthen and shine throughout his work. Wide angles and a fine attention to texture became well known indicators for the work of Bill Brandt. Equally important to his nude photographs are his portraits of fellow artists and writers.
The Henri Cartier-Bresson foundation was built with the purpose of highlighting the works of artists who have influenced history. More information about the foundation can be found at: www.henricartierbresson.org
