Picturing Modernity Selections from the SFMOMA CollectionThe San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's world-renowned photography collection will return to public display on September 24th of 2005. The collection includes pictures from the mid-1800s to the present that capture key moments in the development of the medium and reflect a wide range of practices. This presentation of the collection pays special tribute to the curatorial vision of former Director of Photography Van Deren Coke (1921 - 2004). During his eight-year tenure at the Museum in the 1980s, Coke expanded SFMOMA's photography program con-siderably, building a collection rich in European avant-garde photography, work influenced by Surrealism, and contem-porary conceptual and experimental photography.
