Mariana Castro is a woman of few words and believes her visual expressions speak much great volumes. It isn’t an uncommon attitude for an artist but unfortunately there are few visual creators who can stand by their own convictions. Mariana Castro is certainly not one of them.
Mariana Castro began taking pictures with her father’s Canon F1 until he lost it and she was forced to move on to creating still images with a digital video camcorder connected to the computer. The only problem was that she could never go outside with it and was always confined to taking photos near the computer. It was in those early days that she began experimenting more with darkness then with light; playing with the subject in small confined spaces and learning very quickly that less is often more.
It wasn’t long however before she realized she needed to expand her vision and purchased a 35mm camera so she could exercise more freedom in the spaces and faces she allowed herself to photograph.
