Come Closer Didier CarréDidier Carré is often called, with good reason, the master of shadow and light. In the hands of a lesser photographer, many of his works would be downright pornographic. Models pose in his Parisian studio, legs spread eagle toward the camera, and it’s not uncommon for sex toys to enter into his compositions. And yet, Carré handles this otherwise cliché mode with flair and visual innocence; like a child who isn’t aware this is ‘adults only’ material.
It is perhaps this innocence that puts Didier Carré’s models at ease, giving them permission to display a highly sensual and almost playful sensual side to themselves. Every model between the covers of Come Closer looks confidently at the camera, and many of them do so with a half crooked smile as if they are taking part in a scheme we as the viewer aren’t privileged enough to know. If some conspiracy does indeed exist I’d personally like to keep it a mystery; it’s more fun that way.
