CoVet Melvin Moten Jr. CoVet isn’t your typical book of photographs. Melvin Moten Jr. isn’t searching for beauty or for images that will please the body and soul. Instead he is seeking something deeper, more sinister, and ultimately very primal. Where Robert Mapplethorpe once took his viewers into the first steps of a sexual underground that was initially quite horrifying, Melvin Moten Jr. makes the whole trip and never bothers to look back. Intimate, raw, and explosive, Moten photographs the things we all knew existed, but where too afraid to look for.
Moten is not into prettifying his work, or even making it socially acceptable. His models are the people who inhabit our city streets; the pierced, the tattooed, and the average Jane who pours your morning coffee. Looking through a book like CoVet isn’t necessarily a pleasant experience, but it most certainly will always be a challenging one.
