Gypsy KingMy wife calls me her Gypsy King. Some refer to me as a modern Viking. There are others who call me a Playboy Traveller. A messy and expensive globetrotter says my accountant.
People can call me whatever they want. I am a photographer on tour, exploring the female nude in exotic locations. My goal is to raise awareness of the nude art genre.
Our understanding of nude photography is outdated, limited by definitions from past decades when concepts of playmates, page 3 girls and pin-ups set the standard... all referring to the subjects as objects rather than people. This perhaps reflects photography's roots as a practical rather than a creative discipline. However, the landscape is changing and new maps are required to make sense of those changes. Nude photography is firmly established as an artistic genre, a movement in my opinion that deserves a collective term. We call it THE NEW NUDE.
Launching a print magazine with such a delicate title and, for some regions of the world, controversial content, has already proven to be a challenge. The success of our initiative is actually being determined by the subjective moral views of a few leading individuals in the distribution industry internationally, an industry already suffering from strict nudity restrictions. The United States presents one of the most depressing scenarios of all. Big retailers only want to back high volume titles or, worse, titles that promise to uphold good old family values.
Naturally this will not stop us from our aim to bring our readers the works of some of the world's most talented photographers working with the artistic nude.
It is my intention to stay on the road like a gypsy with my camera in hand and seek moments of unspoiled beauty that can help shift the balance of power away from the regulators towards the consumers.
